Although Oktoberfest is Munich’s most renowned beer festival, it’s certainly not the only one. Starkbierfest (which translates to “Strong Beer Festival” is one of Bavaria’s best-kept secrets that most tourists are unaware of. Not only is this beer festival less crowded and more traditional, it’s also a great way to sample different types of beers that are produced right in the heart of Munich.

If you’re visiting Munich in early spring, then you won’t want to pass up the chance to attend Starkbierfestival! Here’s everything you need to know to have a good time!

What is Starkbierfest?

Starkbierfest dates back to the 17th century when Paulaner monks came up with a strong, malty beer called Salvator to help them get through Lent. This “liquid bread” was packed with calories and nutrients, so they could fast without going hungry. Eventually, what started as a monk’s survival tactic turned into a festival for everyone to enjoy.

Starkbier, or “strong beer,” lives up to its name with a higher alcohol content (usually 7-9%) and a rich, malty taste. During the festival, breweries across Munich roll out their own versions, making it a must for beer lovers looking to try something different.

When is Starkbierfest 2025?

Festivities take place in the early spring, usually starting around mid-March and lasting for three weeks. For 2025, Starkbierfest will have different start and ending dates depending on the brewery. Some events start as early as March 7th, while others will open their doors on March 14th.

Where does Starkbierfest Take Place?

What to Expect at Starkbierfest

Because Starkbierfest is not as well known as other beer festivals in Munich, many visitors aren’t sure what to expect when they attend. But here’s everything you should know to ensure you have a fun and safe day or evening of drinking!

  • Starkbier (strong beer) is indeed STRONG. At 7% – 9%, it’s a lot higher than the normal beers served in restaurants or beer gardens during other times of the year. If you want to try it, make sure to sip slowly or to alternative water and beer with each other.
  • You don’t HAVE to order Starkbier! You can get other beers, water, or even soft drinks if you prefer.
  • Dress up in Tracht! Wearing traditional Bavarian clothing (Lederhosen for the men and Dirndls for the ladies is very common and helps you fit in with the crowd). Just make sure you’re wearing comfy shoes as you’ll be dancing on the tables as the night progresses!
  • Cash is king, just like anywhere else in Munich. Make sure you bring money to pay for drinks and food and coins for tipping your waitstaff.
  • Don’t drive. You’ll be drinking and there’s nowhere to park. Take Munich’s amazing public transportation system instead!
