Often referred to as Oktoberfest’s little sister, Frühlingsfest (Spring Festival) is a lively celebration that kicks off Munich’s festival season in style. Held annually in April and May, this two-week event combines the charm of a traditional Bavarian fest with the fresh energy of spring. With beer tents, amusement rides, and family-friendly activities, it’s a fantastic way to experience Bavarian culture without the massive crowds of Oktoberfest.

What is Frühlingsfest?

Frühlingsfest marks the arrival of spring in Bavaria and offers all the highlights of a classic Bavarian festival—delicious food, refreshing beer, and a vibrant atmosphere with rides and carnival games. It’s set on the same grounds as Oktoberfest, the Theresienwiese, but feels more relaxed and intimate.

There are only two beer tents, but there are plenty of drink kiosks and outdoor beer gardens where you can go if it’s a particularly busy day!

When is Frühlingsfest 2025?

Frühlingsfest typically takes place over two weeks in late April and early May. For 2025, the festival will start April 25th and end May 11th.

Where Does Frühlingsfest Take Place?

The festival is held at Theresienwiese, the same iconic location as Oktoberfest. Conveniently located in the heart of Munich, it’s easy to reach by public transport.

What to Expect at Frühlingsfest?

The short answer is – lots of fun! There’s something for everyone, including party-goers, families, tourists, teens, and kids. But here’s a more detail breakdown of what you can do during your visit.

Beer Tents

Frühlingsfest features two main beer tents. Festhalle Bayernland is known for its cozy atmosphere, traditional Bavarian dishes, and hearty beer. Hippodrom is a colorful, lively tent that offers a more modern take on Bavarian festivities, including champagne and cocktails.

It’s possible to just walk into these tents and get food and drink. But if you’re going at night or with a large group, it’s advised to book a table in advance. Here is the link to do so with Festhalle Bayernland and Hippodrom.

Rides and Attractions

Outside the tents, the festival buzzes with the excitement of carnival rides, from roller coasters to a giant Ferris wheel that offers breathtaking views of Munich. Families can enjoy kid-friendly attractions like carousels and bumper cars, while food stalls serve up Bavarian classics such as pretzels, roast chicken, sausages, and sweet treats like roasted nuts and fried dough.
